About Unit Converter

Unit conversion is the arithmetic nobody wants to do twice. Whether it is a recipe in cups, a parcel weight in pounds, a running distance in kilometres or a disk quota in gibibytes, the answer matters and the working is tedious.

The factors here are the exact defined values rather than the rounded ones that circulate. An inch is defined as exactly 25.4 millimetres and a pound as exactly 0.45359237 kilograms; using 2.54 and 0.454 introduces drift that shows up as soon as you convert something large or convert twice.

Temperature is handled separately from everything else, because it has offsets as well as scales. Converting it with a simple multiplication — the way length or weight works — would put 0 °C at 0 °F, which is a mistake that looks plausible right up until you check it.

How to convert units

  1. Pick a category

Length, weight, volume, temperature, data and eight more.

  2. Choose the units

Select what you are converting from and to, or swap them with one press.

  3. Enter a value

The result appears instantly, along with the same value in every other unit in the category.

Kilobytes, kibibytes, and why your drive looks smaller

Storage has two conflicting conventions. Drive manufacturers use decimal units where a gigabyte is 1,000,000,000 bytes, while operating systems have traditionally used binary units where a gibibyte is 1,073,741,824 bytes — about 7% more.

That is why a 1 TB drive shows as roughly 931 GB in a file manager. Nothing is missing; the two numbers are the same quantity measured with different-sized units. Both are offered here so you can see the difference directly.

US and UK measures are not the same

  • A US pint is 473 ml; a UK pint is 568 ml — about 20% larger.
  • A US gallon is 3.785 litres; a UK gallon is 4.546 litres.
  • A US fluid ounce is 29.57 ml; a UK fluid ounce is 28.41 ml.
  • A US ton is 907 kg; a UK long ton is 1,016 kg; a metric tonne is 1,000 kg.

Frequently asked questions

How do I convert Celsius to Fahrenheit?

Multiply by 9/5 and add 32, so 20 °C is 68 °F. The offset is what makes temperature different from every other conversion here — you cannot do it with a single multiplication, which is why it has its own handling.

Why does my hard drive show less space than advertised?

Manufacturers count a gigabyte as 1,000,000,000 bytes while operating systems have traditionally used 1,073,741,824. A 1 TB drive is therefore about 931 GB by the operating system's measure. Nothing is missing — the units differ by about 7%.

Are US and UK pints the same?

No. A UK pint is 568 ml and a US pint is 473 ml, so a UK pint is about 20% larger. The same applies to gallons and fluid ounces, which is why both are listed separately.

How accurate are the conversions?

Factors are the exact defined values — an inch is exactly 25.4 mm, a pound exactly 0.45359237 kg. Results are shown to ten significant figures and trimmed, so you see real precision rather than floating-point noise like 0.30000000000000004.

How long is a month in the time converter?

An average month, 30.44 days, because a calendar month has no fixed length. For anything involving real dates — how many days until a deadline, or someone's age — use the Date Calculator, which walks the actual calendar.
