About YouTube Tag Generator

Tags help a platform understand what a video is about, particularly when the subject has ambiguous or commonly misspelled names. They are not the main ranking signal — YouTube has said repeatedly that title, thumbnail and watch time matter far more — but they are free to set and take two minutes.

The limit people actually run into is YouTube's, and it is not the one they expect. The cap is 500 characters across all tags combined, and the commas separating them count. Ten thirty-character tags is not 300 characters, it is 318, and a list that looks reasonable can silently drop its last entries.

The suggestions here are rule-based expansion of your own topic — intent prefixes like 'how to' and 'best', suffixes like 'tutorial' and 'for beginners', qualifiers like 'online' and '2026'. Every one is labelled with the rule that produced it, so you can see why it appeared. Deliberately absent is any claim about search volume: that data belongs to the platforms, cannot be computed from your topic, and a tool that displays it without access to it is making it up.

How to generate tags

  1. Enter your main topic

The subject of the video in the words a viewer would use, not an internal title.

  2. Pick the variants worth keeping

Suggestions are candidates, not recommendations. Select the ones that genuinely describe your content.

  3. Watch the character budget

The meter shows how much of the platform's limit you have used, separators included.

  4. Copy in the right format

Comma-separated for YouTube, hashtags with spaces removed for Instagram and TikTok.

Tags that help, and tags that waste your budget

  • Include obvious misspellings of a hard-to-spell subject. This is the one case where tags genuinely rescue discovery.
  • Use your channel or brand name so your other videos surface alongside.
  • Mix broad and specific. Broad tags place you in a category; specific ones win the narrow searches you can realistically rank for.
  • Skip irrelevant trending tags. Misleading metadata is against YouTube's policies and hurts watch time when the wrong viewers arrive.
  • Do not repeat the same phrase in ten slight variations. It burns the character budget for no benefit.

Frequently asked questions

How many tags should a YouTube video have?

Enough to describe it accurately, usually somewhere between 5 and 15. There is no bonus for filling all 500 characters, and a long list of loosely-related tags dilutes rather than strengthens the signal.

Do tags still affect YouTube rankings?

Only modestly. YouTube has said tags play a limited role, mainly helping when the content is commonly misspelled. Title, thumbnail, description and watch time carry far more weight — tags are worth setting, not worth agonising over.

Why does my tag list get cut off?

You have exceeded 500 characters. The count includes the commas between tags, which catches people out — ten thirty-character tags come to 318 characters, not 300. The meter here counts them the same way YouTube does.

Does this tool show search volume for tags?

No, deliberately. Search volume comes from the platforms' own data and cannot be calculated from your topic. Any browser-based tool displaying volume figures is estimating or inventing them, and a confident wrong number is worse than no number at all.
