YouTube Thumbnail Size

The correct YouTube thumbnail and banner dimensions, with safe zones.

YouTube thumbnails are 1280×720 at 16:9 and must stay under 2 MB. Channel banners are 2560×1440 but only a central region survives on every device — both are shown here to scale.

About YouTube Thumbnail Size

A YouTube thumbnail is 1280×720 pixels, a 16:9 ratio, and must be under 2 MB. That size is the upload specification, not the display size — most viewers first see your thumbnail at somewhere around 360×202 in a sidebar or on a phone, which is roughly a twelfth of the area you designed on.

That gap is the single most common thumbnail mistake. A subtitle that reads clearly at full size becomes an illegible smear at browse size. Three or four large words is usually the ceiling, and faces work because they remain recognisable when small.

The channel banner is the other trap. You upload 2560×1440, but only a central 1546×423 region is guaranteed visible — televisions show the whole thing, desktops show a wide strip, and phones show that small central band. Anything outside it is cropped away without warning.

How to size a YouTube thumbnail

  1. Export at 1280×720

16:9 exactly. Larger multiples of the same ratio are fine; smaller images get upscaled and look soft.

  2. Keep it under 2 MB

YouTube rejects larger files outright. Compress it if a detailed image pushes past the cap.

  3. Check it small

Shrink your design to around 360×202 and look at it. If the text is unreadable there, it is unreadable where it counts.

Frequently asked questions

What is the YouTube thumbnail size?

1280×720 pixels, a 16:9 aspect ratio, under 2 MB, as JPG, PNG or GIF. That is the minimum recommended size — larger 16:9 images work fine and downscale cleanly.

Why does my thumbnail look blurry?

Usually because the original was smaller than 1280×720 and got upscaled, or because it was compressed heavily to fit under 2 MB. Start from a large original and compress once, rather than enlarging a small one.

What is the YouTube banner safe zone?

The central 1546×423 region of the 2560×1440 upload. That area shows on every device; everything outside it is cropped on smaller screens. Keep logos and text inside it.

Can I use text on a thumbnail?

Yes, and it helps — but only a few large words. Most people first see the thumbnail at roughly 360 pixels wide, where anything smaller than a headline is unreadable.
